About us

After living and working in Lindi, South East Tanzania with VSO for three years Steve and Sue Scorer could not leave without continuing the help they had started to give to local people in need.

On their return to the UK, Steve and Sue set up Friends of Lindi, which secured Charity Commission status in January 2018 (Registered Charity No.1176494).

Set up initially to finance educational sponsorship of children, Friends of Lindi has gone on to fund other projects to help alleviate poverty and to enhance the lives of children and people in need.

A small charity in an almost unique position in having personal contact with all those they assist. More than 98% of all donations go directly to those in need.

None of the trustees or local representatives are paid for their work. With two trusted local individuals on the ground in Lindi, Ramson Lucas and Venance Mattei, they can facilitate help where it is needed.

Ramson works for Lindi Sports Development Aid, a Danish NGO, which uses sport activities in primary schools to change cultural practices, particularly those involving girls. Venance is a project officer for Aga Khan Foundation in Tanzania working in Primary Education.

The range of support to individuals and groups in Lindi has been far reaching and has included:

  • Establishing and supporting the only English Medium school in Lindi
  • Sponsorship of children, particularly girls in long term education
  • Paying for vocational training and assisting in small business start ups
  • Setting up and supporting six “street libraries” to encourage reading for pleasure
  • Sports related activities.

For more detail and stories relating to the people we have helped, see our projects page and updates page.

  • To continue supporting students in further education. This may be vocational or simply support in government Advanced level institutions.

  • To fund standalone projects that will enhance the lives of people in Lindi.
  • To use the means available to us to end the cycle of poverty – poor education – child exploitation – unemployment – poverty.
  • Create opportunities for young people through short-term vocational projects.
  • Improve the lives of those living in Lindi through practical support and help.
